As Chief Executive of the National Joint Utilities Group Ltd, it is my pleasure to welcome you to our website.
NJUG’s focus is on promoting best practice, safety, quality and co-ordination of works as well as representing utilities and their contractors in discussions with governments and other stakeholders on street works issues. To further these aims, my predecessor Richard Wakelen launched our Vision for Street Works in April 2007. This followed a year-long strategic study looking at how NJUG can further encourage the adoption of good practice amongst its members. I would like to thank Richard for his hard work in leading on the Vision’s development, something that I commit to continuing to drive forward.
Since the launch of the Vision, our members have been working hard to turn it into reality. To demonstrate these efforts, NJUG launched its inaugural Awards ceremony at The Atrium, London, in December 2008. All submissions are being turned into examples of good practice and are available to download from this website. They will also be included in Government Good Practice documents.
To assess both the public’s understanding and views on utility works, the NJUG Board commissioned the independent polling agency ComRes to conduct a survey in 2008. The findings, which are available on this site, were extremely interesting and indicated the public’s appreciation of the essential nature of our works. However, most importantly, the findings told us we need to improve the way we keep the public informed about our works. I will therefore be working with NJUG colleagues and external groups affected by our works during my tenure as CEO, to ensure we as utilities improve the way we communicate about works both on site and in advance of them commencing.
NJUG is also the utility arm of the Highways Authorities Utilities Committee (HAUC UK). We work together with the street and roads authorities, providing the respective governments of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland with professional technical advice and expertise in respect of primary and secondary legislation, together with the detailed associated codes of practice and guidance related to works in the street. Through such efforts, we encourage governments to balance the need to reduce disruption with the wider benefits to society as a whole, of safe, secure, reliable and affordable electricity, gas, communications and water services.
Finally, we continue to act as the reference point on utility street works issues, contributing towards continual improvement, consistency of standards, use of new technology and sustainable working methods. As well as focusing on improving street works I am also committed to working together, better with governments, authorities, and members to deliver the NJUG and HAUC(UK) Visions.
I hope this site is helpful and provides you with the information you require. Should you wish to get in touch, please visit our contact page.
