NJUG Awards 2008

NJUG launched the NJUG Awards 2008, kindly sponsored by Virgin Media, at the NJUG Winter Reception on 2 December 2008. The Awards were designed to recognise, promote and reward best practice within the street works industry and which contributes to turning the NJUG Vision for Street Works into a reality.
Prizes were awarded to utility companies and contractors who provided case studies demonstrating their delivery to one or more of the objectives of the NJUG Vision.
The awards centred around each of the six Vision Statements with an award for each one (although case studies supporting more than one statement were encouraged).
The deadline for entries was 7th November 2008, over fifty submissions were received.
The Awards were presented at NJUG's annual Winter Reception, hosted by Theresa Villiers MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Transport on 2nd December 2008 at The Atrium Restaurant, Millbank, London SW1P 3JA.

There were six awards presented, one for each aspect of the NJUG Vision, and the winners were as follows:The NJUG Safety Award - Northern Gas Networks (Play Safe, Stay Safe)
The NJUG Avoiding Damage Award - West Midlands Gas Alliance (Vacuum Excavation)
The NJUG Partnership Award - Central Networks / EON Energy Services / National Grid / South Staffs Water / BT Openreach / Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions / May Gurney / Enterprise / Energy Services (Kinver Project)
The NJUG Quality Award - Skanska Utilities (Field Based Mobility Solutions)
The NJUG Sustainability Award - Carillion Utility Services (Carbon Footprint Calculator)
The NJUG World Class Award - Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions (Belief Based Behavioural Safety Programme)
Submissions focused on:
· How the case study meets the Vision and which categories it supports
· Demonstrating innovation
· Benefits arising from the project/initiative (e.g. community, cost, environmental, reputation, reduction in accidents etc)
