NJUG, the National Joint Utilities Group, rewarded and shared best practice in the street works industry on Tuesday night at the first ever NJUG Awards.
The awards recognised excellence within the street works industry and were hosted by Theresa Villiers MP, Conservative Shadow Secretary of State for Transport, with a closing speech from Paul Clark MP, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport.
Prizes were awarded to utility companies and contractors who provided a case study demonstrating their delivery of one or more of the objectives of the NJUG Vision for Street Works. The winners were:
The NJUG Safety Award – Northern Gas Networks – Play Safe, Stay Safe
The NJUG Avoiding Damage Award – West Midlands Gas Alliance – Vacuum Excavation
The NJUG Partnership Award – Central Networks / EON Energy Services / National Grid / South Staffs Water / BT Openreach / Balfour Beatty Utility Services / May Gurney / Enterprise / Energy Services - Kinver Project
The NJUG Quality Award – Skanska Utilities – Field Based Mobility Solutions
The NJUG Sustainability Award – Carillion Utility Services – Carbon Footprint Calculator
The NJUG World Class Award – Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions – Belief Based Behavioural Safety Programme
The awards were designed to recognise, share, promote and reward best practice from utility companies and contractors within the street works industry. The winners, selected by an impartial judging panel, were short-listed from entrants across the UK and were announced at the NJUG Winter Reception, held at The Atrium restaurant, London, on 2nd December 2008.
The event was kindly sponsored by Virgin Media.
NJUG CEO, Richard Wakelen, said: “It was great to see utilities, contractors, and relevant stakeholders in one room celebrating all the good work that’s going on in the street works industry. Gas, water, electricity and telecommunications are the bedrock of our society and it is important to both publicise and celebrate best practice and high standards of service. NJUG looks forward to publicising the submissions further as NJUG case studies.”
